Autonomous SEO Study

A planned experiment in letting a system run the loop.

The Autonomous SEO Study is a planned experiment: let a system run the SEO loop (spot work, act, measure, learn) on its own for months, within strict limits, and record what happens. It hasn't started yet, so there are no findings.

“Autonomous SEO” gets promised a lot. We want to find out, in the open, what a system gets right when left alone, where it goes wrong, and where people genuinely still need to step in.

Status

Planned. No data has been collected or published for this study yet. Anything you see quoted elsewhere as coming from this study isn't ours.

The question

When a system is allowed to run the SEO loop by itself, limited to changes that can be undone, what does it get right, what breaks, and where do humans still need to be involved?

Why it matters

Before handing more control to software, it helps to see how that goes over months, including the failures, rather than in a demo.

How we plan to run it

  • One or more test sites where the system can act without risking a real business.
  • Only reversible actions allowed, with every decision logged.
  • A weekly human review of what the system did and why.
  • An honest record of mistakes and near-misses alongside the wins.

What the finished study will include

  • The full methodology, including its limits.
  • The sample size, and who or what was included.
  • Findings, including the unexciting ones.
  • Charts.
  • Downloadable data, where we can share it.
  • Citations for anything we build on.
  • Publication and update dates.

Until then

If you're considering more autonomy for your own setup:

  • Start with actions that are easy to undo, like adding suggested internal links.
  • Log every change the system makes.
  • Review a sample each week, and turn the dial up one task at a time.
