Answer Engine Optimization

Showing up where search gives the answer directly.

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is about showing up wherever search gives people a direct answer instead of a list of links. That includes featured snippets, Google's AI Overviews, voice assistants, and chat-style search.

Think about the last time you searched something like "how long to boil an egg". You probably got the answer at the top of the page and never clicked anything. That box is an answer surface. AEO is the work of making your content the one that fills it.

What counts as an answer engine

Anything that answers the question itself, rather than just pointing you to pages:

  • Featured snippets: the boxed answer at the top of Google's results.
  • AI Overviews: Google's AI-written summaries above the results.
  • Voice assistants: Siri or Alexa reading out a single answer.
  • Chat-style search: tools like ChatGPT or Perplexity that reply in full sentences.

How to show up

The basics are refreshingly practical:

  • Answer the question early. Put a clear one- or two-sentence answer near the top of the page, then expand.
  • Use the question as a heading. If people search "what is X", a heading that says "What is X?" helps.
  • Keep answers tight. Short paragraphs, lists, and numbered steps are easier to lift into an answer box.
  • Add schema. Structured data (code that labels a page as an FAQ, a how-to, or a product) helps search engines understand what's on the page.
  • Be the trustworthy source. Accurate, current, well-sourced pages are the ones that get picked.

The catch: fewer clicks

Here's the honest part. When the answer appears right on the results page, some people won't click through.

AEO is still worth doing. Being the answer builds recognition and trust, and people with bigger questions do click. But measure more than clicks: mentions, citations, and searches for your brand name all tell part of the story.

How AEO differs from GEO

The two overlap heavily, and people use them loosely:

  • AEO is the broad term for any answer-first search experience, including old-school featured snippets.
  • GEO focuses on answers written by generative AI models.

Use AEO when you mean answer surfaces in general. Use GEO when you're specifically talking about AI-generated responses.

Common mistakes

  • Burying the answer under a long introduction.
  • Writing for the box, not the reader. A snippet-friendly sentence still needs to lead into a genuinely useful page.
  • Measuring only traffic, and missing the value of being the answer.
