Automate Topical Map Creation

Turn a messy keyword list into a clear plan of what to cover and how it connects.

A topical map is a plan of all the topics your site should cover, grouped into main themes and sub-topics, with notes on how the pages link together. Automating it means software turns your keyword data into a first draft of that plan.

The short version: AI models can draft a topical map. Editors then check that it covers the right entities (the people, products and ideas a topic involves), doesn't create pages that compete with each other, and fits the business.

Priya has 600 keyword groups from last quarter's research and a blog with no clear structure. Her boss wants a content plan for next year by Friday. An automated first draft gets her 80% of the way there, and she spends her time fixing the parts that don't fit the business.

What topical map creation involves

Building a topical map means grouping keywords into themes, choosing a main "pillar" page for each theme, planning the supporting pages beneath it, and deciding how they link together. It also means checking you haven't planned two pages that target the same search, which is called cannibalization.

What software can take off your plate

  • Grouping hundreds of keywords into themes and sub-themes
  • Suggesting a pillar page for each theme and the supporting pages under it
  • Matching planned topics against pages you already have
  • Flagging planned pages that overlap with existing ones
  • Drafting a suggested linking structure between pages

What to keep in human hands

  • Deciding which themes matter to the business and which to drop
  • Checking the map covers what your customers actually care about
  • Choosing the order to build pages in

A simple first automation

A first-draft topical map from your keyword list:

  1. Export your grouped keywords and your current page list into a sheet.
  2. An AI step sorts the groups into five to ten main themes.
  3. For each theme, it suggests a pillar page and supporting pages.
  4. A second step checks each suggestion against your existing pages and marks overlaps.
  5. You review the draft and cut or merge anything that doesn't fit.

Common mistakes

  • Treating the AI draft as final. It won't know what your business sells best.
  • Planning far more pages than you can realistically write and maintain
  • Ignoring pages you already have, and creating duplicates

Where it sits in the loop

Topical maps sit between Discover and Prioritize. They turn raw opportunities into a plan you can work through. See the full SEO Automation Loop for all eight stages.

How much control to give it

Use Draft. The software produces the map, and a person edits it before anything gets written. If you're not sure, start with the software watching and suggesting, and raise its freedom only once you can check its work and undo its changes. The SEO Autonomy Dial explains each setting.
