Automate SEO Audits

Run regular site checkups that produce a to-do list, not a report that sits in a folder.

An SEO audit is a checkup of your whole site: technical health, content quality, and on-page basics. Automating it means running that checkup on a schedule and turning the findings into a prioritized list of tasks.

The short version: Audits should kick off actual work, not just produce PDFs.

Your agency delivers a 90-page audit PDF once a year. It's thorough, and it sits in a shared drive, mostly unread, until next year's arrives. A smaller audit that runs every month and opens five tasks would get far more fixed.

What SEO audits involves

An audit covers crawling and indexing, broken pages, page speed, titles and headings, thin or duplicate content, internal links, and schema. The hard part isn't finding issues. It's deciding which ones are worth fixing.

What software can take off your plate

  • Running a full crawl and checks on a monthly schedule
  • Comparing results with last month to spot what's new or worse
  • Scoring each issue by how many important pages it affects
  • Creating tasks in your project tool for the top issues
  • Tracking which issues were fixed and which came back

What to keep in human hands

  • Deciding what's truly worth fixing, given your team's time
  • Understanding the business context behind odd-looking findings
  • Talking to developers and other teams about the fixes

A simple first automation

A monthly audit that opens tasks:

  1. On the first of each month, a crawler scans the site.
  2. A workflow compares the results with last month.
  3. New or worsening issues get scored by how many high-traffic pages they affect.
  4. The top five become tasks in your project tool, with the affected pages listed.
  5. You review and assign them.

Common mistakes

  • Producing huge lists with no priorities
  • Treating every warning as urgent
  • Auditing on schedule but never fixing anything

Where it sits in the loop

Audits live in Discover and Measure. Their job is to feed good tasks into Prioritize. See the full SEO Automation Loop for all eight stages.

How much control to give it

Running the audit can be fully automated. Creating tasks can be too. Fixes should go through people. If you're not sure, start with the software watching and suggesting, and raise its freedom only once you can check its work and undo its changes. The SEO Autonomy Dial explains each setting.
