Automate Programmatic SEO

Build many genuinely useful pages from one template and a dataset, and keep them fresh.

Programmatic SEO means building lots of pages from one template and a spreadsheet of data, like one page per city, per integration, or per product comparison. Automation generates the pages and keeps them updated when the data changes.

The short version: Pair page generation with checks that each page is genuinely different, rules for which pages search engines should index, and a way to keep the data fresh.

A software company integrates with 150 other tools, and people search for things like "our product plus Slack integration" every day. Writing 150 pages by hand isn't realistic. Building them from a template and an integrations database is, as long as each page has real, specific information.

What programmatic SEO involves

Programmatic SEO means finding a search pattern with many variations, gathering good data for each one, designing a template that's genuinely useful, generating the pages, and deciding which ones deserve to be indexed (stored by search engines so they can appear in results).

What software can take off your plate

  • Generating pages from a template and a dataset
  • Updating pages automatically when the data changes
  • Checking each page has enough unique content to stand on its own
  • Keeping thin pages out of search engines until they have enough data
  • Adding internal links between related pages

What to keep in human hands

  • Choosing a search pattern people actually search for
  • Designing a template that's useful, not just keyword-filled
  • Reviewing samples before publishing hundreds of pages

A simple first automation

A small first batch:

  1. Pick one search pattern and gather data for 20 variations in a sheet.
  2. Design one page template and have a person write the fixed parts.
  3. A workflow generates the 20 pages as drafts.
  4. A check flags any page with too little unique information.
  5. You review, publish, and watch how they index before building more.

Common mistakes

  • Publishing thousands of near-identical pages at once
  • Swapping one word per page and calling it unique
  • Letting the data go stale, so pages show wrong information

Where it sits in the loop

Programmatic SEO touches Create, Optimize, and Publish, with a strong need for Measure to see which pages actually get indexed and visited. See the full SEO Automation Loop for all eight stages.

How much control to give it

Once a template is proven, updates to existing pages can run on Execute reversible actions. New batches should stay on Execute with approval. If you're not sure, start with the software watching and suggesting, and raise its freedom only once you can check its work and undo its changes. The SEO Autonomy Dial explains each setting.
